Winc – Is It The Best Wine Of The Month Club?wine of the month club, Winc, has been so successful because they recognized one key fact: getting into wine is hard work. It takes a lot of trial and error, and that can make it a very expensive drink to learn about.
At the same time, many of us just don’t have the time to go out and browse aisle after aisle of wine, trying to deduce through some obscure reasoning which bottle we’ll actually enjoy once we open it up at home.
This wine club solves these problems by helping you refine your pallet online and then sending the best options right to your door. Their wine comes in a huge variety, and comes from vineyards all around the world. In other words, once you sign up, you’re almost guaranteed to find a wine you love.
Still not convinced? We’ve reviewed the club to show you all the benefits of a subscription and all the downsides that you might discover down the road.

Winc is a wine club with an incredible new way of moving wine purchasing forward.
It came out of a fairly traditional idea. In the beginning, in 2012, it was developed simply as another wine club with online membership. The focus was on providing a personalized element to the wine purchasing and drinking experience. Lots of places offer you wine online, but few of them make it easy to navigate your way into a membership that meets your personal taste.
While those who live in grape country in the heart of California may have no trouble finding a great wine brand and a style of wine they love, the rest of us have a hard time figuring out what wine we like and what brands we should trust.
Founders Xander Oxman and Geoff McFarlane saw an opening for a wine club that did more than automatically select bottles and send them out each month. That might work for some people, but it creates a real chance you’ll get a lot of bottles over a year that you simply don’t like.
That’s a waste of money, and it can be discouraging to wine drinkers who like what they like in a bottle and nothing else. The company’s great innovation, then, was to create a system that guided the drinker toward the bottles they’d enjoy the most.
It starts out by asking simple questions of new members and then uses reviews after each bottle to further narrow down the huge list of bottles on offer to find those that specifically make each customer happiest.
Each bottle of wine is shipped directly to the member’s house, making it easy to sign up, easy to start finding wine you like, and easy to keep getting the wine you like best.
Within a short period of time, members start getting wine every month that they want served at their table every night.
Memberships are free, and bottles start at $13 each, plus shipping. There are also more expensive bottles on offer for those with more refined tastes (many are in the $40 range).
You can also sign up for a monthly subscription of three bottles for $39 plus shipping or four bottles for $52 with no shipping. The flexibility makes it easy to enjoy as much or little wine as you want each month.

As we’ve already mentioned, there are a lot of wine of the month club options out there. It’s tough to stand out compared to a lot of the really established brands on offer.
The club is genius (and limitation) is the focus on focusing on your personal taste instead of introducing you to a wider world of wine. By helping you discover your pallet, this is a great option for those who like wine but don’t know anything about it.
They concentrate on customer satisfaction. It even guarantees you’ll never pay for a bottle that you hate. Combined with it’s affordable prices, this is the ideal place to go if you want to get to know the wine you want on your table every evening.
If you’re looking to expose yourself to new adventures in flavor, though, and you’re willing to take the risk of disliking some of the bottles you receive, there may be better wine of the month options out there for you.
Look, wine is a big investment, even when you’re doing it with an easy and cost effective way. You don’t want to rush into a subscription you aren’t completely sold on.
To help you make up your mind, here are some of the major pros and cons to a subscription.
- It helps you refine your pallet without having to make a lot of expensive, disappointing purchases.
- If you hate a bottle, you don’t have to pay for it. They are in the wine satisfaction business.
- If you love a bottle, you can order more any time.
- There’s a lot of variety available, so you’re sure to find a lot of wine you love.
- Great customer service and an easy system to find your way to great wine.
- It makes it easy to give wine and subscriptions as a gift.
- Take a month off or cancel your subscription whenever with no additional costs or fines.
- There are lots of discounts and extra ways to save.
- Because of alcohol shipment laws, there are a number of states they can’t deliver to.
- The subscription may seem a little expensive for the very occasional wine drinker.
- Because it’s online, there’s no try-before-you-buy, so you may (early on) get a wine you don’t like.
- A tendency to sell out of the most popular (and delicious) wines, making it hard to repeat purchases sometimes.

One of the biggest selling points is just how easy it is to get signed up and start getting bottles delivered to your door. To get the delivery system up and running, just follow these 9 steps.
Here are 9 simple steps to subscribe:
Step 1: Find out if the club delivers to you
Laws about the delivery of wine and other alcohol differ state-by-state. There’s no reason to start surfing for great wine if they can’t deliver it after you make a selection.
Thankfully, they offer a convenient place to check if they can deliver to you. Put your zip code in and find out if they can get wine to your door without upsetting the cops. If they say they’ll deliver, then it’s time to get to finding out what kind of pallet you have.
Step 2: Fill out the questionnaire
The club has a quick, six question questionnaire that hones in on just what kind of wine will appeal to you. The questions aren’t directly wine related, so even if you’re a complete novice, you can still answer the questions easily.
Step 3: Sign up
Like every other service online, you’ve got to sign up here. The benefit of signing up is that you can start building a wine pallet profile that will increasingly, bottle after bottle, get closer to that exact taste you love when you open a bottle.
Step 4: Browse the recommendations and make a choice
After you’ve filled out the questionnaire and signed up, they will provide some recommendations to you. All you have to do at this point is pick a few bottles that sound great or sign up for a membership where it automatically sends your top preferences every month.
Step 5: Remember to review
It works best when you keep coming back and reviewing your experience. The more you like a particular kind of wine, the more it will steer you towards future purchases of that kind. If you don’t like it, they will get you as far from bottles of that sort as possible.
Step 6: Order your favorite bottles again quickly
They make it easy for you to get your favorite bottles over and over again …but there’s a catch. They only have so many bottles, so if you happen to hit on one you really love, and that one happens to be popular, you need to act fast to make sure you get more in the mail headed your way as fast as possible.
So, if you get a bottle in the mail, and you have an incredible glass for dinner, don’t overthink it. Go online and order another bottle straight away to make sure you don’t miss out.
Step 7: Look for ways to save
The bargain hunters amongst us are always looking for that extra way to save a little more. If you’re such a person, you’ll love this wine club. There’s an extra 10% off on your purchase if you get more than 12 bottles. That can turn into some pretty tidy savings over time (that you can then reinvest in more wine!).
You can also get $30 in free wine if you invite a friend to join, and you can get up to $100 if you purchase member credits.
Step 8: Skip months whenever you need to
If you’ve gone a little wine crazy and suddenly run short for a month, you don’t have to worry about choosing between your wine subscription and your rent. The club lets you take a month off whenever you want. There’s no cost to a short suspension.
It’s a stress-free process that allows you to use your membership when you can afford it.
Step 9: Cancel anytime
However, if the moment comes that you’ve decided to cut yourself off from your subscription forever, they make it easy to walk away. All it takes is a quick call or live chat (crucially, emails won’t work for cancelation!), and you can end your membership.
There are no extra costs or fines for a spur of the moment cancellation.
