OkCupid, or “the dating site you use when you’re looking for something serious” as many people refer to it, was the first online dating site when it was created in 2004.
Back then, online dating was considered taboo in the dating world and was reserved for “weirdos” and “losers.” Today, it’s a $2 billion industry, and it is one of the most well-known free dating sites out there.
In this OkCupid reviews, we’ll be giving you a quick rundown of and help you decide if it’s worth giving a shot.
OkCupid is a free dating website and mobile app that was founded in 2004 by four Harvard graduates who also founded the popular study guide service SparkNotes.
It uses a one-of-a-kind computer algorithm to pair users with potential mates based on their shared interests and other information they provide such as gender identity, the types of relationships they’re looking for (serious, just hookups, short-term, etc.), and the type of people they’re interested in.
But those aren’t the only factors that determine how well you’ll match with someone. After creating a profile, there are thousands of questions you can answer – from the mundane to the serious – that will narrow down your possible matches and (according to OkCupid) help you find the BEST match possible.
While it uses traditional online profiles much like any other social media platform, they also have a “like” and “ignore” system called DoubleTake where you can indicate which users you’d like to get to know better by either liking their profile or choosing to ignore it. Once you like someone’s profile, you’re able to send them a message. They don’t even have to like you back! You’re also able to block people you don’t want contacting you and hide profiles you’re tired of seeing.
OkCupid is completely free to use. You can however, pay for their A-List feature which gives you added bonuses to the service such as unlimited likes, ad-free use, and advanced search filters that help you find that one perfect match. You can also buy boosts, which make your profile more visible to more users.
Much of the information you provide is public and can be seen by other users of the service for obvious reasons. You wouldn’t want to schedule a date with someone you know absolutely nothing about would you?
If you find a profile of someone you like, you can reach out and contact them within the website or app. What happens next is entirely up to you and the person you’re chatting with. Schedule a date or decide that there isn’t enough of a spark to even bother… The choice is yours!
Want to get this box for yourself or as a gift for someone?
You can’t really go wrong with a free service unless it’s complete trash… And OkCupid definitely doesn’t fit that description.
Dating is all about the numbers. The more women you go on dates with, the more chances you’ll have of finding love. And getting dates with girls on a dating app is much easier than getting dates by going out into the real world and talking to strangers.
And for that reason alone, it is an extremely valuable service.
Why We Love OkCupid
We listed down the things we’re happy about OkCupid to help you decide.
Here are 3 reasons why we love OkCupid:
1. You Can Use it Your Way
Who doesn’t love free services? Like I keep telling you, OkCupid is completely free to use right out the gate.
But I personally, HATE advertisements, which is why I use adblocking services while browsing on my computer and I pay for YouTube Premium to avoid having to sit through a pitch for a product I don’t care about.
So for me, paying extra for OkCupid’s A-List feature to avoid ads makes financial sense. You on the other hand…
…might find value in buying boosts so more people see your profile, or paying for the Incognito Mode plan to avoid getting bombarded by thirsty girls.
Or maybe you’re completely fine with using the free service. Whatever your preferences, OkCupid allows you to use it YOUR way. You’ll just have to pay extra for some things.
2. The Questions
Here at Mantelligence, we talk a lot about starting conversations, asking questions, and showing interest in the women you’re attracted to.
The cool thing about OkCupid is that all of those questions we tell you to ask have pretty much already been answered on the site.
OkCupid asks you thousands of questions if you have the time to answer them – and when you’re looking at a girl’s profile – those questions give you a look into her personality BEFORE you even make first contact.
OkCupid’s questions are ridiculously convenient for weeding out women who aren’t a match for you. Before the internet and OkCupid, you’d have to spend $30+ on food and drinks before you realized you and a girl didn’t have anything to talk about.
Plus, they range from just general interests like what you’re reading right now, to the more serious like how long you want your next relationship to last.
3. The Numbers!
OkCupid has countless users and like we always say, dating is a numbers game and the more women you meet, the more likely your chances of finding love.
With plenty of women in one place and absolutely zero pressure of face-to-face interactions, OkCupid is a convenient and completely free way to meet new people and hopefully find what you’re looking for.
Things We Don’t Love about OkCupid
There are a few things we’re not really excited about OkCupid. Check them out!
Here are 2 things we don’t love about OkCupid:
1. The Like System
When a girl likes your OkCupid profile, you’ll get a notification about it… But you won’t be able to see who it was unless you liked her as well.
It’s really annoying because you’ll have a notification bubble at the top of your screen of how many people have liked you and there’s no way to make it disappear…
…Unless you pay for an A-List subscription to see who likes you for $20 for a 1 month subscription.
2. Dating is Hard
This isn’t really a bash at OkCupid, but more of online dating in general. It’s very easy to use old photos and good angles to make yourself look better on social platforms.
And that means when you finally meet up with a girl you’ve been chatting with, you could potentially be thrown a curve ball because she looks nothing like her photos.
For a more consolidated look at our favorite things and least favorite things about OkCupid, check out these pros and cons.
- 100% free online dating that uses a one-of-a-kind algorithm to help you find your perfect match.
- The DoubleTake feature is a useful tool to help weed out members that probably won’t be a good match for you.
- In-Depth questions help you find people with similar answers to those questions.
- Two levels of paid subscriptions that come with useful tools to make your OkCupid experience even better.
- Incognito Mode is another paid feature that gives you even MORE control over your profile
- 22 gender options and 13 orientation options to help you find someone who appreciates you for you.
- Takes a long time to set up your account, but that’s important when your chance of successfully finding a compatible partner depends entirely on how much information you provide about yourself.
- Only able to like a limited number of profiles a day and you’re not able to see who likes you (unless you upgrade to A-List or they also like you)
Don’t forget, OkCupid is completely FREE, Which means the company has to make money somehow!
And one of the ways they make that dough is by offering paid features, which help users in a number of ways while they’re visiting the site or using the app. Prices for each plan vary based on how many months you pay for up front. The more months you pay for, the cheaper each month.
|A-List Basic||Enables you to send unlimited likes and see who likes your profile (without having to also like them). Also unlocks extra search filters and message read receipts. Disables advertisements.||$10 – $20 / month|
|A-List Premium||Premium has everything from the Basic subscription with extra goodies. Adds a daily boost at peak hours every single day, you’re able to see people’s answers to public questions without having to answer those questions first, and you’ll see and be seen by more attractive matches.||$25 – $35 / month|
|Incognito Mode||Maintain an active OkCupid profile while being completely invisible to other users you haven’t already messaged or liked. If you like or message someone and realize they’re not for you, you can block their profile and if they try to contact you, they’ll get a notification that your profile doesn’t exist.||$10 – $20 / month|
|Boosts||Boosts show your profile in more results more often than normal. They last for 30 minutes and make it so your profile is seen by more people. Does not guarantee more likes, only more visibility.||$2 – $3 each|

OkCupid is totally free, so yes it’s worth it if you don’t mind them collecting your personal information.
The paid services are probably very useful to certain people as well, but it’s up to you to decide whether or not you actually need them.
